The First 24 Hours: Bleeding & Gauze
A gauze pack was placed over the surgical site before you left the clinic. This gauze must be held in place with steady, biting pressure to encourage blood clot formation.
Immediate Bleeding Guidelines:
- Bite Steady: Maintain gentle, firm pressure on the gauze for 30–45 minutes. Do not chew on the gauze.
- Changing Gauze: Change the gauze pack only if it becomes completely soaked. Dampen the new gauze slightly with cool water before placing.
- Slight Oozing is Normal: Saliva colored pink or red is normal for up to 24 hours. Refrain from constant spitting, as this creates suction that dislodges the crucial blood clot.
- Black Tea Alternative: If bleeding continues, wrap a moistened black tea bag in gauze and bite firmly for 30 minutes. Tannic acid in black tea promotes fast clotting.
Managing Pain & Swelling
Swelling is your body's natural defense mechanism and typically peaks around 48 to 72 hours after surgery. Pain levels are best managed by taking your comfort medications *before* the local anesthesia fully wears off.
Swelling Control
Apply ice packs to the side of your face for 20 minutes on, then 20 minutes off, during the first 36 hours. After 36 hours, switch to warm compress wraps to encourage blood flow and relax tight jaw hinges.
Comfort Medication
Take prescribed comfort pills exactly as outlined. If you are taking over-the-counter pain relievers, alternating Ibuprofen (Advil) and Acetaminophen (Tylenol) every 4–6 hours is highly effective. Never take medications on an empty stomach.
Diet & Hydration Guidelines
Staying hydrated and keeping your calorie intake steady is vital for proper tissue regeneration. Avoid hard, crunchy, or spicy foods that can physically scratch the raw surgical sutures.
Critical Diet Rules:
Allowed Soft Foods (First 3 Days):
- Applesauce, yogurt, and pudding
- Warm broths or creamy soups
- Mashed potatoes or squash
- Protein shakes and fruit smoothies
Strictly Prohibited Items:
- No straws (creates suction that pops clots)
- No hot liquids (melts starting clots)
- No popcorn, nuts, seeds, or chips
- No alcohol or tobacco for 7 days
Oral Hygiene & Cleaning
Keeping your mouth clean is essential to prevent bacterial infection, but aggressive scrubbing will dislodge delicate tissue stitches.
- •First 24 Hours: Do not brush, floss, spit, or rinse. Let your mouth rest completely to protect the starting blood clot.
- •Saltwater Rinses (Day 2+): Gently rinse your mouth with warm saltwater (1/2 teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water) 4–5 times a day, especially after meals. Simply let the water roll out of your mouth into the sink. Do not spit.
- •Gentle Brushing: Use an ultra-soft toothbrush to clean your surrounding healthy teeth. Completely avoid brushing directly over the surgical incision site for 1 week.
Activities & Rest
Resting with your head elevated is the simplest way to reduce blood pressure spikes that trigger throbbing pain or sudden bleeding.
Head Elevation: Keep your head elevated on 2–3 pillows whenever resting or sleeping for the first 3 days.
Physical Activity: Refrain from heavy lifting, bending over, or high-cardio exercises for at least 3–5 days following surgery. Over-exertion increases blood pressure and causes bleeding at the surgical site.
